From a very young age, due to his parents’ work,Zabka studied to become an actor. When the family moved to California, he attended California State University when, at age 18, he made his acting debut in The Greatest American Hero (1983). He got his big break a year later when he played the lead role of antagonist Johnny Lawrence in The Karate Kid (1984). His performance in the film got him high when he was nominated at the 985 Young Artist Awards for Best Young Supporting Actor for a Motion Picture Musical, Comedy, Adventure or Drama.

For this reason, he took a step back when he returned to school to study filmmaking, following in his father’s footsteps.
