Judy Greer is starring on a new mockumentary show on Hulu titled Reboot, and she is definitely going all out for it.
Hulu has released the trailer for Reboot, a brand new comedy from the mind of Modern Family creator Steven Levitan. The story follows the dysfunctional cast of an early 2000s sitcom called “Step Right Up”, who must face their unresolved issues in today’s fast-changing world when a young writer pitches a reboot of their show. While everyone loves a good laugh, what happens behind the scenes is often a whole different story. And the clip, featuring Judy Greer and Keegan-Michael Key’s characters, shines a light on some of these scenarios.
Filmed as a mockumentary, the trailer sees the cast reunite to reboot the old sitcom for a younger audience. Facing their past relationships to bridge the gap since they last met, the personal dynamics between the old co-stars is poised to make or break the series. But the strain is evident when Bree Marie Larson (Judy Greer) and Reed Sterling (Keegan-Michael Key) have an extremely awkward off-set reunion which sees the actress sort of go topless. But the duo, who were an item 20 years ago on the show-within-a-show, aren’t the only ones having problems.
Zack (Calum Worthy), “Step Right Up’s” former still has his mother accompanying him to set. And the show’s new writers gasp when out-of-touch series creator Gordon (Paul Reiser) asks if they are doing “one of those intern diversity training things” after seeing women and people of color in the room. Meanwhile, a young executive named Elaine is seen telling the cast that she’s new to humor. After Judy Greer and Keegan-Michael Key’s character’s what she does at the network, Elaine (Krista Marie Yu) reveals that she’s Hulu’s Vice President of Comedy.
Reboot marks Levitan’s return to scripted television after his wildly successful 11-season run on Modern Family. The single-camera project also sees the creator bring together some of comedy’s brightest stars for the project. This includes Keegan-Michael Key as Reed Sterling, Johnny Knoxville as Clay Barber, Judy Greer as Bree Marie Larson, Rachel Bloom as Hannah, Paul Reiser as Gordon, Krista Marie Yu as Elaine, Calum Worthy as Zack, and Kristian Flores as Connor. Speaking about the series via Variety, Head of Scripted Content for Hulu Jordan Helman said the streamer is honored to house Steve’s return to television with Reboot.
President of 20th Television, Karey Burke, also gushed over Levitan’s comedy genius, adding that his idea for Reboot is as hilarious as it is timely. “We’re thrilled that our friends at Hulu love this sly, wildly funny look at the television comedy business as much as we do,” she told the publication. Burke also gave a nod to the spectacular cast, led Keegan-Michael Key and Judy Greer, the Just Shoot Me! alum assembled, saying it speaks to both the quality of the writing and the appeal of Hulu as a home for smart, high-quality television.
Reboot, featuring the talented Judy Greer, will premiere on Hulu with three episodes on September 20th. After that, new installments will stream weekly. According to Deadline, Levitan also serves as executive producer alongside Danielle Stokdyk and Jeff Morton. The series is produced by Steven Levitan Productions and Twentieth Television.
