How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris is making a return to television in a big way. The actor has signed on the lead Netflix’s new comedy series Uncoupled. The news was first exclusively reported by Giant Freakin Robot and has since been confirmed by Deadline.

The series is the brainchild of Younger and Emily in Paris creator/executive producer Darren Star and longtime Modern Family executive producer Jeffrey Richman. The pair will also produce the show alongside Neil Patrick Harris. Filming is scheduled to begin in New York later this year.

Uncoupled follows the story of Michael (Neil Patrick Harris) who thought his life was perfect until his husband of 17 years suddenly leaves. Now Michael has to confront two nightmares – losing the person he thought was his soulmate and navigating life as a single 40-something gay man in New York City.

The show will mark Neil Patrick Harris’s return to Netflix since appearing in the streamer’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. The series had a successful three-season run, where he starred as the villainous Count Olaf. While the actor is best known for playing Barney Stinson for nine seasons on How I Met Your Mother, his more recent television credits include American Horror Story where he appeared in the fourth season.

He also appeared in Netflix’s Mystery Science Theater 3000 reboot and an episode of HBO Max’s acclaimed miniseries It’s A Sin. On the big screen, Neil Patrick Harris is set to star in Warner Bros upcoming Matrix 4 which is set for release on December 22, and Lionsgate’s The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent which debuts on April 22, 2022.

As previously reported, there probably isn’t a better actor than Neil Patrick Harris for a project like Uncoupled. As Barney Stinson, he was often flirtatious and mischievous, but viewers would often get a glimpse into his secret vulnerable side. The actor has tapped into that vulnerability in other roles too. This includes his portrayal of Billy in Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, where he played a masterful and fun villain while managing to make the character relatable through his performance.

Interestingly, Neil Patrick Harris is also an acclaimed author. In October 2014 he released a memoir titled Neil Patrick Harris: Choose Your Own Autobiography, which is structured like a choose-your-own-adventure book. His book spent two weeks on The New York Times Best Seller List. This led to him penning a young adult novel called The Magic Misfits which was released in November 2017. It is the first in a four-book series of the same name.

In his personal life, Neil Patrick Harris publicly came out as gay in November 2006, saying, “I am happy to dispel any rumors or misconceptions and am quite proud to say that I am a very content gay man living my life to the fullest and feel most fortunate to be working with wonderful people in the business I love.”

He attended the Emmy Awards in September 2007 with his fiancé David Burtka, later confirming the relationship. In an interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Neil Patrick Harris said his relationship with Burtka began in 2004. In 2010, Harris announced that he and Burtka were expecting twins via a surrogate mother. Their son, Gideon Scott, and daughter, Harper Grace, were born on October 12, 2010.
