Her family has always encouraged her to pursue a career as a professional tennis player. Before going professional in 2000, she became world number one in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) junior rankings. 1994–2003 Tiit Kivistik was Kaia’s trainer. Andrei Luzgin was Kaia’s coach from 2003 to the fall of 2007. After Luzgin, she was coached by Fredrik Lovén of Sweden, but their association terminated in February 2008. Pablo Giacopelli was Kanepi’s next coach (until September 2008). Luca Appino has been her coach since November 2008. Kanepi was coached by fellow Estonian player Mait Künnap after November 2009. She ended her relationship with her coach and agency in February 2010. She began working with Silver Karjus, her coach from April to March 2012. Märten Tamla was her coach from 2013 to 2014.
