While it may sound unbelievable, the dreary and demon-infested land of Diablo 3 contains a level packed to the brim with ponies, green pastures, rainbows, and clouds with smiley faces on them. This is known as the Whimsyshire level, and to access it, you'll need to get the Staff of Herding.
Getting the staff requires some resource collecting, and if you're looking to get the staff yourself, then we have you covered. In this guide, we'll break down all the items needed to create the Staff of Herding and how to get them, and of course, how to create the staff once you have all the necessary items.
Update on 17 April 2023: We've updated this article with the latest information about the Staff of Herding in Diablo 3, and how you can easily get all the items required.
Diablo 3 Staff of Herding: All Items & How To Get
First things first, we'll discuss the items needed to create the Staff of Herding, including the recipe that you need to craft it at all. Below we've broken down how to get the recipe/plan for the staff, which drops from Izual in Act VI, as well as how to get it whether you are in the campaign or playing in adventure mode.
How To Get Staff of Herding Plan
Campaign Mode:
- start a new game for Act IV, Quest 4: Prime Evil, Part 1: Begin Quest;
- port to the Crystal Colonnade waypoint;
- enter the Gateway to the Silver Spire;
- cross the bridge and enter the Silver Spire Level 1;
- find the entrance to the Great Span in the Silver Spire Level 1;
- enter the Great Span and defeat Izual.
Adventure Mode:
- create a game;
- port to the Act IV, Silver Spire Level 1 waypoint;
- find the entrance to the Great Span in the Silver Spire Level 1;
- enter the Great Span and defeat Izual.
Next, we'll move on to the items needed to create the Staff of Herding. One thing to note is that depending on whether you're playing on a console or PC will determine which items you need, with a PC requiring an extra two items to make the staff, so we've marked those below as well.
The Staff of Herding Items on Console:
- The Black Mushroom - is found on Cathedral Level 1. It does not always appear, thus you must restart the task A Broken Crown until it does. To swiftly access the Cathedral, go to Cathedral Guardian, enter Leoric's Passage, and then ascend inside the Cathedral proper.
- Wirt's Bell - When you reach Act 2, you can purchase this item from Squirt the Peddler.
- Gibbering Gemstone - This item is obtained from Chiltara on the Caverns of Frost's second level in Act 3. Look for the cave in the Fields of Slaughter. If it hasn't spawned yet, restart the game.
The Staff of Herding Items on PC:
*This will require the items listed above, as well as the additional two shown below*
- Leoric's Shinbone - Found on rare occasions in a fireplace at Leoric's Manor. To farm it, go to Leoric's Mansion and pick the quest The Imprisoned Angel. The fireplace is located in the first few rooms of the structure.
- The Liquid Rainbow - Can only be looted if the Mysterious Cave spawns. To check if it's in your game, head to the Oasis's southern end and look for Zeven the Alchemist standing outside a building. If he appears, slay the creatures and enter when he unlocks the door. If he isn't present, restart the game.
Now that you have all the items, you can simply head to Haedrig the Blacksmith. Once there, you can teach him the recipe, then craft the Staff of Herding. Now that you have it, you can open the portal to Whimsyshire.
