Early years
Gaudreau was born in Salem, New Jersey, and grew up in Carneys Point Township, also in New Jersey. As a child, Gaudreau played baseball for Penns Grove Little League[6] and ice hockey with a team from Hershey, Pennsylvania, at the 2006 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. He went to high school in Gloucester City, New Jersey, which is on the other side of the Delaware River from Philadelphia. He went to high school in Dubuque, Iowa, and got his diploma there.
Playing Career
Gaudreau played in the United States Hockey League (USHL) with the Dubuque Fighting Saints in 2010–11. He was an All-Star in 2011 and helped his team win the Clark Cup as USHL champions. Because of how well Gaudreau played during the season, he was chosen for the USHL All-Rookie Team and the All-USHL Second Team. He was also named the Rookie of the Year in the USHL.
The Calgary Flames picked Gaudreau in the fourth round, 104th overall, of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. Gaudreau, who was listed at 5’6″, was one of the shortest players taken in the Draft.
Gaudreau started his hockey career in the NCAA with the Division I Boston College Eagles team in the Hockey East conference. Before the 2011–12 season, he went to training camp with the Calgary Flames. He originally signed a Letter of Intent to play for Hockey East rival Northeastern University, but he chose Boston College when Northeastern Hockey head coach Greg Cronin quit in June 2011 to work for the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs.
Gaudreau scored 21 goals and 23 assists (44 points) in 44 games as a freshman at Boston College. He had the most points of any freshman. He was a big reason why Boston College won the National Championship. He scored a spectacular goal late in the third period of their 4–1 win over Ferris State University in the final. Gaudreau won the Bill Flynn Trophy as the Hockey East Championship Tournament’s Most Valuable Player. He also helped the Eagles win the Beanpot Tournament for the third year in a row. After the tournament, he was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).
Gaudreau became the star of the team during his sophomore year. He also improved on his already impressive stats, scoring 21–30–51 in 35 games and leading the country in points per game at 1.46. After helping the U.S. win a gold medal at the 2013 World Juniors, he then led the Eagles to their fourth straight Beanpot title. Even though he lost to archrival Boston University in the semi-finals of the Hockey East tournament and to Union College in the first round of the NCAA tournament, he was named Hockey East Player of the Year and an ACHA First Team All-American for his great offensive play. On April 3, 2013, Eric Hartzell, Drew LeBlanc, and Gaudreau were named as the three finalists for the 2013 Hobey Baker Award. Drew LeBlanc from St. Cloud State won the award in the end.
Even though there were rumors that he would turn pro and join the Calgary Flames, Gaudreau chose to stay at Boston College for his junior year. He said that playing with his younger brother Matthew, who joined the team in the fall, was one of the main reasons he stayed. Gaudreau’s decision to stay was good for Boston College, as he led the NCAA in every major scoring category. In 40 games, he scored 36 goals and 44 assists for 80 points, or 2 points per game, which is the most points any player in the country has scored since 2003. In November, after the Eagles lost 5–4 to Holy Cross, Gaudreau was put on a line with Bill Arnold and Kevin Hayes. This line quickly became the most offensively powerful in college hockey, scoring 46 goals and 68 assists for 114 points as a group. Gaudreau also tied Paul Kariya’s record for longest scoring streak in a single Hockey East season with 29 goals and 61 points in 31 games. [18] He was named the league’s Player of the Year for the second year in a row. He also led the league in scoring with 36 points in 20 games and was unanimously named a First-Team All-Star. On March 20, he was named one of the top ten Hobey Baker finalists, and on April 2, he was named one of the top three “Hobey Hat Trick” finalists for the second year in a row.
Even though the team lost to Union College in the Frozen Four on April 11, Gaudreau won the Hobey Baker Award, which is given to the best ice hockey player in the NCAA.
